Milk

After the race on Sunday I wanted more food (running 6.2 miles with an 8:44 min pace per mile will do that to you). Kelly and I have been dying to try Milk for months and Sunday was the perfect day for it.

Milk had a mixture of sandwiches, salads, ice cream and treats. The star of the show here is the ice cream. I asked my friend Molly a few months ago where the best place to get ‘real ice cream’ in LA is and she said ‘Milk’. Tangent: most ice cream in LA is in the vein of Pinkberry. There is a special place in my heart for Pinkberry and Yogurtland, but sometime you want good old fashioned ice cream like you ate when you were a kid. I am not afraid to indulge every once and a while. From time to time you need to have something you really like. In my opinion, if you don’t occasionally give in to ice cream a healthy lifestyle can’t really be maintained. My opinion only.

I was still hungry from throwing down 6 miles that morning so I got a sandwich before sampling the ice cream. I read the words prosciutto and I knew which sandwich I wanted.

The sandwich had prosciutto, slivered potato, picked onion, arugula, provolone and black pepper cream. The sandwich was delicious. The bread had crispy crust and the potato in the sandwich was unexpected but a great choice with the prosciutto and the arugula.

It also came with a delicious side dish.

Lunch was delish but the real star of the show was the ice cream. There are several flavors of ice cream and several delicious sandwich and drumstick treats!

I opted for a scoop of nutella flavor and a scoop of coconut flavor.

The nutella literally tasted like ice cream fudge. It was AMAZING. The coconut flavor was better, can you believe it!? It tasted like I was eating a coconut. The flavor was fragrant and delicious. I will be coming back to Milk whenever I need my ice cream fix.

India Jones Truck

Hey blog world. How was your Monday? Mine was tired. Getting up early yesterday + staying up through the VMA’s + 9 am class = tired LCC. I was so busy this weekend I just didn’t want to do any work today, which wasn’t a viable option since I had reading to do. This week is going to be pretty busy too. Is it Friday yet?

It was a beautiful and not too hot day in LA so I went to visit the food trucks at UCLA and I stumbled on the India Jones Truck!

As you may have guessed, they serve Indian food!

I ordered a Frankie and Samosas. Both were pretty small portions but together they made a pretty good meal! I grabbed a table on the grass and in the shade. Perfection! I did Wills and Trusts reading and chowed down.

The samosas were bite size and delicious. The dipping sauce was savory and the outside was fried to perfection. I polished these puppies off in a matter of seconds.

Next I tried the Frankie.

The Frankie sandwich is a roti wrap with chutney and your choice of meat on the inside. I chose lamb. This was delicious. First of all the portion was small enough to enjoy without getting stuffed. Next, the roti wrap was fantastic! Flakey and crispy. MMMM. I want another piece of roti! Overall, India Jones is one of the better food trucks I’ve tried. I will be having it again the next time it is at UCLA!

After lunch I nearly fell asleep in Wills and Trusts. The material is exciting and often rather scandalous. My Professor told us today about how he represented Anna Nicole Smith in front of the Supreme Court. See! I told you it was interesting! Indian food just puts me to sleep. Early to bed tonight, lots to do tomorrow! Hope you had a happy Monday!

Santa Monica 5000

Good afternoon everyone. [edited to add: sorry to everyone who read that with a question mark. Post race = poor editing. Who do I think I am, Zoolander?] How was your morning? Mine was stellar!

I woke up this morning at the crack of dawn to run the Santa Monica 5000 10k! The alarm went off at 6:00 am (although in anticipation I woke up before it) and I rolled out of bed. I stretched out a little and then contemplated what pants I should wear for the race. Its been cool in LA the past few days and Santa Monica tends to be pretty chilly and foggy in the morning. After checking my phone and realizing it was only in the mid 50’s I made the executive decision to wear leggings, and I am glad that I did because it was in the mid to low 50’s for the entire race.

Getting ready this morning was super easy because I laid all of my things out last night so all I had to do was get dressed and grab a bag.

I ate a typical breakfast, peanut butter toast, and went to pick up my friend Ela who ran the race with me.

I also had an iced tea and packed a lara bar just in case I got hungry (I didn’t).

Ela and I drove to Santa Monica and parked near the finish which gave us about a mile long walk slash jog to warm up. It felt really good to stretch my legs a little bit before the race. I was very excited after we parked the car and walked over. There were people all over. I love seeing other runners!

We got to the starting area, went to the bathroom and dropped the bags. We gave ourselves about an hour to prepare which was the prefect amount of time. It was nice not to feel rushed before the start. We even had time for a little photo shoot.

It was freezing at this point.

We made our way over to the starting line and stood by the 10 min mile marker. I was really excited and my adrenaline was starting to pump! The race went off right on time.

Mile 1: Mile one was awesome (isn’t it always?) We were running along Main Street in Santa Monica which has shops. I ran, listened to Cee-Lo and window shopped. Because I had jogged a little to warm up my legs felt awesome. I was really enjoying listening to my music and feeling no pain! I ran past Ela and I was on my own.

Mile 2: I passed the mile one sign and started in on mile 2. I started to feel a little bit hot but not too bad. For a second I worried that I shouldn’t have worn leggings. My legs still felt strong. I started to fall in behind a lady in a florescent green pull over who I followed for the entire race. At the end of mile 2 was the first water station. I’ve never negotiated a water station before and let me tell you, I was a hot mess. I ran through the station spilling water all over the K Swiss rep who was handing it out. Drinking water while running at you race pace is a poor choice! It was not satisfying. Also at the end of mile two you passed the finish line, which is a cruel joke.

Mile 3: I checked my time on my ipod when I passed the mile three sign and I was at 26 mins which is around my 5k time. Knowing that I was maintaining my 5k time made me feel good and nervous. For a second I regretted starting so fast and worried that my time would plummet in the second half. My legs were starting to get a little tired but I no longer felt hot. I was still trailing the same women which was good.

At this time the elite runners had looped around and were running by me. I saw a bunch of men go by and then I saw the lead women. I whooped it up a little bit when I saw her and I was pretty excited. You can take the girl out of Simmons, but you can’t take the woman pride out of the girl. Seeing her pushed me to run a little harder.

I also passed another water station. This time I walked through it and I was much less of a hot mess. Water station success! The course turned on San Vicente and I realized that the people who had already looped around appeared to be running down hill. I knew what that meant! My legs were starting to feel the running but I dug in and ran up hill.

Mile 4: Mile 4 occurred at the San Vicente turn around at 11th street. After the long uphill I was pretty tired but after the course turned it went down hill which was awesome! It gave me the kick that I needed to keep going. I pulled in front of the women in the florescent pull over.

Mile 5: As I passed the mile 5 sign I got excited and picked up my pace a bit. I was being passed by a bunch of people. I was running with a man who looked over at me and said, “we don’t like them anyways. Don’t worry the Kenyan is still behind us”. He made me laugh and it was exactly what I needed. By the beginning of mile 5 I was tired and was feeling a bit nauseous.  This guy helped me push through the final full mile. I could see the finish line in the distance and there were people cheering on the sidelines. I gave one of them a thumbs up (cause I’m a nerd like that).

Mile 6-6.2: I saw the mile 6 sign and wanted to start sprinting to the finish but the finish sign appeared to be really far off but before I knew it I was approching a photographer and I could see the chip time rug thing. I elongated my strides and sprinted to the finish!

My overall time was 54:05 which was 6 mins faster than the goal that I set for myself. I’m still waiting to see what my average mile pace was but I assume it was slightly under 9 mins. I am really happy with my time. I pushed my self really hard and I feel really good about how I finished.

Ela finished shortly after I did. We had our chips ripped off and walked around to regain our breaths. We headed to the Santa Monica pier which has a post race party. The post race party had some food but to be honest I didn’t really want to eat anything. My nausea had passed but I wasn’t hungry yet. I did manage to stalk the zico man for a recovery beverage. We drank zico and stretched out in the grass.

I’ve never been so happy to drink a zico! Unflavored is my favorite and it tasted like the best thing ever. Ela and I walked around Santa Monica place for a little bit to keep out legs loose. It was really, really cold at this point and we just wanted to get back to Westwood. So we drove home, showered and went out for post race treats which included a non fat vanilla ice latte from Coffee Bean which my other favorite recovery drink 😉 and a bagel with cream cheese! Nom Nom Nom! I love second breakfast!

Overall it was a good race. I ran pretty hard and in the future I am going to try to alter my running playlist so that I don’t have any of my “fast songs” playing for the first two miles. I figure that I could conserve energy and then go all out in the final two miles but the fact that my 5k time was about half of my 10k time seems like a good thing to me. I’m pretty proud of the fact that I maintained my pace in the second half. There is nothing like the high of finishing a race. I can’t wait to run another one!

Get Ready to Run

I’m back!

Tomorrow I am running in my first 10k, the Santa Monica 5000. I’m really excited to run the 10k! I think it will be a great opportunity to get more accustom to running long distance races. I hope I can figure out how to negotiate water stations etc. in advance of my half marathon in November. Because this is the first 10k I’ve ever run there is no pressure to set a personal record or anything. I just want to finish and enjoy the experience.

In preparation I made a delicious meal for dinner.

I breaded chicken tenders with panko and baked them at 425 for 35 mins. I also roasted potatoes, both red and purple, as well as my new favorite veggie, Brussels Sprouts.

I also made a honey mustard sauce.

I love me some honey mustard! I used the same recipe that I used for the honey mustard chicken I made a few weeks ago. It was a simple yet delicious dipping sauce for the chicken.

This meal was HUGE! I roasted way more veggies and potatoes than I really needed to but they are so good. I breaded the chicken with panko before I baked it. Panko is by far my favorite ingredient to bread with because it comes out crispy and delicious every time. I ended up saving one of the pieces of chicken.

My meal was so delicious looking, even Izzy wanted a piece of the action.

Now, now… back away from the dinner!

In other exciting news… guess who I get to see this week?

Source

That’s right, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer! He is coming to UCLA to speak. Because there is limited seating there was a lottery to get seats and I got one. I am so excited I cannot even tell you. The Supreme Court is the pinnacle for attorneys and the Justices are kinda like rock stars. I’m even more excited because Breyer is one of the Justices I like (no offense to Scalia and Thomas).

In my google search for an image of Justice Breyer I found this image:

Obviously this had to be shared! I’m hoping that my legal career will be empowered by seeing Justice Breyer and I really hope he reads us “Oh The Places You’ll Go!” Here’s to hoping!

Garter

How’s everybody’s weekend going? Mines been pretty good so far but very busy. It all started last night with another ABC University outing with Adam, Leanna, Catie and Emily. This time we were going to Bar G, Garter.

Garter is located in Venice and has a really cool vibe. As the name suggests, the bar is 1920’s retro with red walls and black chandeliers.   Because we were some of the first ladies to arrive we got free garters!

Everyone with skinny jeans, put your leg in! The bar filled up fast with ABC Students. Its no wonder. There were so many great drink specials, like $3 shots!

I’d like to tell you what this shot was, I have no idea what it was…

After shots we signed up for a beer pong tournament. Catie opted out, beer pong is a bit germey.

Adam and Leanna made up one team:

Emily and I were another:

Both teams made a strong showing but unfortunately we were not successful…

Can you see the look of defeat on my face? The other team were total show offs, they even did push ups while playing. Ugh. We only lost by two cups. I felt it was a valiant effort.  After beer pong we had more drinks including a “Cape Coddah” (vodka cran).

And there was dancing. Lots and lots of dancing. They played lots of hip hop which is always fun post beer pong and post shots. Overall it was a pretty fun time. ABC University always provides a good time! Cannot wait to go to bar H!

Casa Vega

Happy Friday everyone! How is the last day of the work week treating you? Mine has been good so far.

Last night Kelly and I drove to Sherman Oaks (yep that would be the Valley) for some delicious Mexican food from Casa Vega.

Some of you might recognize Casa Vega from Flipping Out on Bravo with Jeff Lewis. Not going to lie, Flipping Out was probably the main reason that we wanted to go to Casa Vega.

As seen on the last episode of Flipping Out, the new door:

We put our name in at the front and were told that there was a 45 mins wait which is fine because we just made our way to the bar.

Can I just say that Casa Vega is way smaller inside than Flipping Out makes it look? It was dark in the restaurant and there were awesome red booths. Overall I really liked the vibe and the decor.

Obviously it was time for a margarita on the rocks with salt.

Can you really go wrong with a marg? I didn’t think so! While the wait was long I didn’t really mind. Kelly and I enjoyed the bar and were even solicited for legal advice about someones DUI. For the record: I am not an attorney and this is not legal advice. After a thoroughly awkward yet entertaining interaction we were seated.

When you get down to it, we came for one thing:

But we had some business to take care of first…

chips and salsa. The chips were warm when they arrived at the table!

We also had a salad which had a tostado and re-fried beans.

It was a pretty good salad and it was flavorful enough on its own that I didn’t really want to add any dressing at all. I love that because it keeps the salad healthier.

Then the entrees arrived…

I now present… Lobster Enchiladas! This is the Jeff Lewis special and we loooooveed it. They are NOT skimpy with the lobster and the dish was delicious. By far my favorite part of the meal.

We also ordered another entree:

We also ordered the Burrito Empenada which is a deep fried burrito with pork. This was good, but nothing really can hold a candle to the Lobster Enchiladas. Clearly Jeff Lewis has good taste!

Over all it was a good meal. Maybe not the best thing I ever ate but overall pretty delicious and definitely worth the trip.

Hope your all having a fantastic Friday! Tonight I hit “Bar G” or “Garter”. More good eats to come this weekend and I am running in a 10k in Santa Monica on Sunday. Should be an awesome weekend. What are your weekend plans?

The Biggest Loser

Hope everyone is had a good hump day!

Its official. The biggest loser in the Left Coast Contessa house is Izzy the cat. Since I adopted her nearly two years ago Izzy has lost over 30% of her body weight!

Izzy was a Christmas present from my ex boyfriend in November of 2008 but I wasn’t Iz’s first owner. Izzy was rescued from an abandoned apartment building in New Hampshire in Spring of 2005 when she was a kitten. She was taken in by a very nice woman who had her spayed. Sadly, she had a number of other cats and they ganged up on Izzy and bullied her. Poor Iz even had her arm broken.

Eventually Izzy was adopted by an art student who put her on an automatic feeder. Little girl gained a TON of weight. Later the art student adopted a pit bull. Izzy had bad interactions with other animals in the past and she was totally traumatized by the pit bull. That is when Izzy came into my life.

I love Izzy but she was so big when I first got her. We didn’t measure her food when we first got her and Izzy was already overweight to begin with. She was about 18 lbs at that time.

Here is a picture the first Christmas I had Izzy:

Here is another photo of Izzy from May 2009 (around the time I started to measure food):

Izzy in my Boston apartment!

When I moved to LA I began to realize that Izzy needed to lose weight. In my new apartment she had a lot more room to run and play which helped but I needed to do more.

working out or hardly working?

Measuring her food also helped her lose weight but eating dry food wasn’t helping Izzy. A friend of mine in vet school explained to me that dry food is like junk food for cats. Cats needs to eat a primarily protein diet. Dry food does not have enough protein. Thus, after careful research I started to feed Izzy a protein diet consisting of wet food that doesn’t feature wheat gluten as a main ingredient.

Wheat Gluten is basically just carbs. Its pretty easy to find high protein food.  You can find certain types of Fancy Fest, Newman’s Own cat food, and 9 lives. You have to read the label of the can  before purchasing it and yes its slightly more expensive than dry food. But, honestly, it was worth it. Izzy is now 5 (her birthday is in April) and I want her to be able to live a full cat life complete with jumping and limited joint pain. I started the new diet on New Years Day. She started to lose weight more quickly!

Today Izzy went to the vet for her first official weigh in in over a year. The last time I weighed her she was around 15-16 lbs.

Iz weighed 12.8 lbs today! That is a very healthy cat weight. Mission accomplished! When she got home Iz got some party mix because girlfriend loves her party mix!

Here is her “after” shot:

I know this whole post screams “crazy cat lady” but I love my cat. She has been with me though moving multiple times, stomach flu, cross country loneliness, a big break up and law school. I love my companion animal. If you can, rescue a pet. Educate yourself beforehand and be prepared but you will never regret adopting over purchasing a pet. I love that I can give Izzy a happy and healthy forever home.

Andddd here is what the human ate for dinner tonight, Spag from last week but with roasted squash!

Boring, I know, but delicious.  Something interesting tomorrow and Friday I hit Bar G with ABC University so get excited!

Back to Reality

Catching up from the weekend?

I sunned in Corona del Mar

I drank at the Big Foot Lodge

I ran 8.6 miles and fell in love with figs

Is it just me or is the first day back after a long weekend the hardest? I woke up and it was so overcast that I thought that my alarm was wrong. It was in the 60’s and gloomy all day long. It even rained for a few mins!! Can you believe it? So unlike LA. Plus I had a hard time getting motivated all day. Oy.

Finally I went on a run and then I made this:

Corn fritter (from Cooking Light, only 200 calories) over a bed of lettuce with heirloom tomato and prosciutto. Yum. Recipe to come later, I’m just too tired right now to write it out.

In other news, this arrived today:

It’s the sequel to the Preppy Handbook! Wahoo!

I think it should be noted that “preppy” is a throwback to classic etiquette. Please note: as a race studies law student I find the saying “good old days, the ways things used to be” to be racist, sexist, and likely classist. However, True Preps are all about the art of the handwritten thank you note, casual elegance, and classic style. Its not about how much Lilly Pulitzer you wear, it’s about kicking it “old world”. It’s not about how much money you have because talking about money is considered vulgar. I will admit that this is a complicated, possibly troublesome concept, but I will not elaborate more. This is a Food and Lifestyle Blog, not my liberal manifesto.

Anyways, I decided to go on a scavenger hunt for examples of prep around my apartment. Here is what I found:

Monogrammed LL Bean Boat and Tote

Old books… Preppies love book, especially vintage books. See my copy of Blacks Law Dictionary, published in the early 1900’s.

Vintage post card from Martha’s Vineyard (double points!) and my Vineyard cup. I spend 8 consecutive summers in the Vineyard. 3 of them were with the Sailing Scouts. Yep, I was a sailing scouts. Triple preppy points!

Gin, no explanation necessary.

Boston, where I spent my college years (at a Woman’s College)

Pearls.

My rearing on the North Shore. Although I will admit, Wilmette is no Lake Forest.

That’s about it for tonight. For something completely different: I’m currently watching “Barbershop” which is one of my favorite movies of all time! Hope everyone had a good Tuesday (Monday). Only three more days until the weekend!

Holy “Fig”gen’ Yum!

Yesterday while I was at the farmers market I was able to snag something delicious: figs! Did I use them for lunch today? Abso-“figgen”-lutely. Did I come up with a bunch of fig puns? Fig yeah! Ok, I promise that the fig puns end here.

I decided to make an open face sandwich inspired by crouqe monsieur. I toasted a slice of Ezekiel bread. Then I spread Dijon mustard on the slice and topped it with sliced figs, prosciutto, and Gruyere cheese. I baked it at 400 for another 4 mins and then I turned on the broiler for the last 4 mins.

Sweet and salty with slightly browned cheese. Oh my goodness do I love me some figs. Fan-figgen-tastic! OK, that’s the last one.

Post figs I went on a run. I planned to run for 8 miles but I got a little bit lost on side streets and ended up going for 8.6 miles. I managed to maintain a pretty good pace though out my run. Every time I got tired I thought about my form. Afterward I had a chocolate milk! Great recovery drink! Its going to be my go to in the future. I stretched it out and then parked it on the couch with an ice pack. So far I have kept up with all the long runs I have planned and I haven’t walked once.

Hope everyone is enjoying a great labor day! I’m clearly going to eat more figs.
