Set Your Intention

You know what my favorite part of yoga is? Setting your intention for the practice. It always helps me get in the right mentality for the practice and sort things out. Here is what I sorted out today:

  • In life there are very few things we can control. When I let go of the desire to control the world around me I feel at peace.
  • Everyday we all do the best we can with what we have. I’m human, not super human.
  • Letting go of control allows me to let go of worrying.
  • Worrying does not equal control. So, then, why are we worried again?
  • I am so grateful for the beautiful city that I live in!

I snapped this shot as I was leaving yoga. How pretty is my city?

The light!

Yoga helps me see the beauty in every day. I am so grateful for it today.

Anyway, after yoga I got take away from California Roll Factory which has two locations: Beverly Hills and West LA. I hit the West LA location for some sushi take out. I just didn’t have it in my to make another “no sink” meal. And I am so glad I did because I came home to this:

HOT KITCHEN MESS YA’LL! The sink is being worked on… still being worked on? The cabinets were open when I got home, there was no note… I’m unsure if I can use the sink so I was very happy I had take away. Izzy seemed completely traumatized. Don’t worry she got some party mix for her troubles.

Then I got into my sushi… I got fresh water eel roll and shrimp tempura roll.

So glad I satisfied my sushi craving. Sometimes you just take to take it easy and get take out. This is life.

Run Around

Today was my first day back at running because post race running just didn’t happen this week. Despite my proclamation a few weeks ago, June gloom didn’t actually lift until yesterday. Thus it has been much hotter! With sun in the AM temps go up. When I went for my usual late run it was still in the 70’s which, according to Runners World will seriously slow down and stress your run. It was hard. I took a couple breaks at stop lights and tried to take it slow but it was not easy.  Whatever, it happens.

Then I came home and made dinner which was boring.

Clearly I have become complacent… I think I have to go back to meal planning which I have fallen off of since, ummm, finals? Literally, yesterday I was trying to think of a good, unique dinner that I made recently and I can’t think of one. Sad. I will resolve to be better.

Also, you know what a good pick me up is?

Citrus! Instant pick me up. I need more orange slices in my life!  In fact, I am off to have more now…

Exciting News!

Dinner tonight was more of the same. However, I have exciting news. I went to the doctor today and I was weighed. I have officially lost 18 lbs since I moved to LA! Also, my blood pressure was described as “excellent”. For the past two years when I would get my vitals read my doc would always say that my blood pressure was a little on the high side so this is a welcome news! See what a little healthy eating and running can do?

Kitchen Crisis

Last night I was greeted with a little surprise while doing the dishes: water gushing from under my sink. Ick. I decided that I cannot use my sink until this epic problem is resolved. This presented a small issue for dinner. I didn’t want to use the sink at all but I was hungry! I almost went to the prepared food section of Whole Foods. But then I thought, this is a challenge.

And who am I to turn down a challenge?

Thus, I produced this…

Ezekiel bread toasted, artichoke dip, spinach, radish, tomato paste, basil and goat cheese! This was DELICIOUS!

Wonderful!

I will be having this again (probably tomorrow if my sink isn’t fixed!)

After dinner I ran some errands and while I was out at Ralphs I picked up this…

Post race splurgage? Why not!?

One final note: Yesterday in my post race energy wave I did some home improvement. My mom sent me some great, cheap gold frames which I hung in my stairwell.

I cannot wait to add more! You like?

Keep LA Running 5k

Today I ran my first race, the Keep LA Running 5k in Playa del Rey!

This morning I woke up bright and early (6 am on Sunday, ugh) and immediately put on pandora radio and started to stretch. Then I enjoyed some breakfast and suited up.

I enjoyed this 100 calorie larabar and I had this piece of peanut butter toast, which I only had 1/2 of.

And I geared up!

Then I drove to Playa Del Rey which is near LAX and on the water. The race course was downhill/flat. Never having run a race before I hung out a good distance behind the start and waited for the race to start. If your from so cal than your familiar with what the weather is like by the beach at 8:00 in the morning: very overcast, spitting a bit, and slightly more humid. The race got underway, I started my timer as I passed the start line. I felt really good when I started running and was passing a lot of other runners. I was only one song in on my ipod when I passed the mile 1 sign. This was kinda odd for me and honestly I think the mile marker was in the wrong place. There is NO WAY I ran a mile in under 4 mins.

I was feeling really good after mile 1. I kinda had to go to the bathroom but I charged onward. It felt like I ran forever before I saw the mile 2 sign. It was around this time that I wished I had a garmin so I could know exactly how far I had traveled and what my pace was. Especially at the beginning of the race I was telling myself to hold back so that I wouldn’t gas out at the end. The competitive side of me really wanted to push it, but I kept telling myself to hold back.

After I finally saw the mile 2 sign my legs were starting to burn a little bit and I was feeling tired. The people around me had thinned out so I tried to keep pace with a couple other runners. I could also see the elite runners approaching the  end of the course which helped me push. Then the course turned and went down hill. I kept pushing hard but I could feel my pace slowing down a bit. All of a sudden I could see the mile 3 sign and I got really excited. The course turned again and went down hill. I speed up on the down hill and suddenly my legs stopped hurting and I sprinted to the finish! My ipod said 25:50 and the official clock read 26:00. I know the official time is 26:00, but I’m going to call it 25:50 because I started pretty far back from the start line. The best part of a first race? No matter when you finish, its a PR!

Overall, I discovered that I love running races! I definitely got a runners high from the race today and I can’t wait to do it again. When I had to get up early today I was thinking that this better be worth it, and it SO was. I was also really happy that my first race was a low key 5k so I know what to expect when I run longer, more intense races.I was also happy that I started further back in the crowd. It was a major self esteem booster that I was passing people rather than being passed. I am so thankful for my body and the amazing things that it can do. I am beginning to really, really love my body. Since I’ve started running 6 months ago my confidence has boosted partly due to weight loss (16 lbs and counting) and glowing skin. Most of all, running gives me confidence where other parts of my life (ahem law school) might not!

Looking forward to the 1/2 marathon I want to be focused on setting a pace. The major takeaway from this race is that I want a Garmin or another type of race timer so that I know my pace and if I should slow down or speed it.  For a 5k I can basically run as fast as I need to but a 1/2 marathon is going to be a whole new ball game. I plan to do a lot of yoga for the next week or so and throw myself into 1/2 marathon training. I also want to run some more races soon. I cannot wait until November for another runners high!

What I'm eating this week

Greetings! Today I made a farmers market run…

Radish, only $1.00 a bunch!

And because they were only $2.00 a bunch…

I love hydrangeas! I got busy today baking these cookies, running errands, and picking up my number for tomorrows race! I am excited for my first race. After than I am going to plan out my 1/2 marathon training schedule. Off to a BBQ & happy weekend!

Coffee Bean Thursday!

Non fat, no sugar vanilla latte. Go ahead and hate. I have a love and devotion for the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Today at lunch it was actually cold enough to get a hot drink (like mid 60’s). WTF LA? Why does it look like Seattle outside? I was actually kinda ok with it. I took a long walk at lunch and enjoyed my latte. That is something I miss about being in Boston, walking with a hot drink on a cool day. Tis wonderful.

And here is some daily inspiration. The CB on Wilshire and Vermont has a “motivational” type quote everyday… so here was today’s!

You never know where something new, different, or unexpected will take you! It’s just important to be open to the path your on…

Elle Woods Was Right

A manicure can fix anything. Can I just say that I didn’t have an “ideal” day today. And you know what, I was OK with it but I was not OK with accidentally leaving my phone at work. FAIL. Say a prayer that it is still there when I go there tomorrow. Anyways, I was OK until I discovered that I left my phone at work and couldn’t call my cross country support network. Cue the freak out. After I got myself under control I talked to this one…

Shes a good listener, but she talks back. Then I got the manicure and went to Walgreens so I can start on a little home improvement project that reminds me about my family…

Moving to LA has been an awesome adventure, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes I miss having my support network “across the quad”. There is nothing like friends you know. Sometimes 3,000 miles (or 25 if your Catie or 750 if your Kat) is just too far.

The final offensive for a bad mood?

Suit up kids, it’s dinner time!

I put on some music

and I threw this together…

Roasted veggies (including tomato, zucchini, squash, asparagus, and broccoli)  with a cheese risotto. There was also a glass of red wine and some chocolate. Delicious.

I’m off to bed. Fingers crossed that I manage to wake myself up tomorrow AM!

My Fridge Runneth Over

My fridge is packed ya’ll! Tons of farmers market finds, some awesome fruit salad (thank you Danielle) and I have things from Catie’s house from over the weekend. I started to dent it tonight with…

Butternut squash in balsamic vinegar sauce (gently brown butter with pine nuts or walnuts, once the butter is brown add balsamic and cheese). This is a single serving.

Hummus and 1/2 a red pepper…

Purple potato cheese crisps. I nicked this recipe from Tina but switched it up with goat cheese and purple potatoes. I these were pretty good but I would love to try them with sweet potatoes in the future. BTW- these are baked, and oh so delicious. See we don’t have to fry things for them to be tasty.

Tonight I caught “Losing it with Jillian” and killed a run. It was an awesome run! Def made up for a lazy run on Saturday. Can’t wait for the race on Sunday!
