Scenes from Saturday Morning

Yesterday I finally went back to the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market for the first time since the iphone fiasco. I bought my fruits and veggies and just took some pictures. I was there early and it was pretty empty which was nice.

Yesterday wasn’t as productive as I hoped so I am off to Coffee Bean for hours and will be running 9 miles later. Hope you have a relaxing Sunday.

Ready, Set, Blog! Project Food Blog Challange 1

Welcome to Left Coast Contessa! My name is Katherine. I’m a 23 year old law student cultivating a healthy lifestyle and exploring Los Angeles.

The first challenge for Project Food Blog, a blogging competition hosted by Foodbuzz, is to introduce my blog and describe what defines me as a blogger. This has made me to think, who am I as a blogger?

Well, my food philosophy is simple: I love delicious, delectable indulgences crafted from clean, local ingredients.

I enjoy sipping cocktails,

putting together pizzas,

indulging in dessert,

reviewing restaurants,

exploring my surroundings,

all while studying for my law degree.

Food blogging is my escape from everyday.

I enjoy cooking with luxurious ingredients but I live on a federally funded student loan budget.

I believe in wine

and cupcakes like I believe in voting: early and often.

I am your average 23 year old student. I like to make special, extravagant recipes while accommodating my student budget. I don’t have a lot of time or money, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be special or that it has to be frozen.

Vote for me starting September 20th!

Project Food Blog!

Exciting blog news! I have the privilege of participating in Foodbuzz’s Project Food Blog. Project Food Blog is a competition for Foodbuzz’s featured publishers. We are going to be put through a series of challenges which will be judged by a panel of judges, other bloggers and YOU!

Casa Vega

Happy Friday everyone! How is the last day of the work week treating you? Mine has been good so far.

Last night Kelly and I drove to Sherman Oaks (yep that would be the Valley) for some delicious Mexican food from Casa Vega.

Some of you might recognize Casa Vega from Flipping Out on Bravo with Jeff Lewis. Not going to lie, Flipping Out was probably the main reason that we wanted to go to Casa Vega.

As seen on the last episode of Flipping Out, the new door:

We put our name in at the front and were told that there was a 45 mins wait which is fine because we just made our way to the bar.

Can I just say that Casa Vega is way smaller inside than Flipping Out makes it look? It was dark in the restaurant and there were awesome red booths. Overall I really liked the vibe and the decor.

Obviously it was time for a margarita on the rocks with salt.

Can you really go wrong with a marg? I didn’t think so! While the wait was long I didn’t really mind. Kelly and I enjoyed the bar and were even solicited for legal advice about someones DUI. For the record: I am not an attorney and this is not legal advice. After a thoroughly awkward yet entertaining interaction we were seated.

When you get down to it, we came for one thing:

But we had some business to take care of first…

chips and salsa. The chips were warm when they arrived at the table!

We also had a salad which had a tostado and re-fried beans.

It was a pretty good salad and it was flavorful enough on its own that I didn’t really want to add any dressing at all. I love that because it keeps the salad healthier.

Then the entrees arrived…

I now present… Lobster Enchiladas! This is the Jeff Lewis special and we loooooveed it. They are NOT skimpy with the lobster and the dish was delicious. By far my favorite part of the meal.

We also ordered another entree:

We also ordered the Burrito Empenada which is a deep fried burrito with pork. This was good, but nothing really can hold a candle to the Lobster Enchiladas. Clearly Jeff Lewis has good taste!

Over all it was a good meal. Maybe not the best thing I ever ate but overall pretty delicious and definitely worth the trip.

Hope your all having a fantastic Friday! Tonight I hit “Bar G” or “Garter”. More good eats to come this weekend and I am running in a 10k in Santa Monica on Sunday. Should be an awesome weekend. What are your weekend plans?

Box Lunch

Hello long weekenders!I had class today, and I packed this to go along with it:

This salad was totally epic. Tortellini, goat cheese, prosciutto, pepper, sun dried tomato, and capers over a bed of lettuce. Who is impressed that I busted out the pasta at 8:00 am? I am! This was pretty delish and I got to avoid eating Lu Valle, which is the on campus dining facility near the law school. Its not my favorite but this salad is!

Tomorrow I am off to the beach and drinks. Sunday I have an 8 mile run planned. Have a great weekend everyone!

Roasted Tomato Pasta

Dinner tonight was simple.

That doesn’t mean that it wasn’t delicious!

No pics of the process. All you have to do is take an heirloom tomato (or any other that you like) and roast with garlic for 30 mins at 425 degrees. While doing that cook spaghetti. I use whole wheat. Drain the pasta and put a dollop of EVO in the pasta pot. When the tomatoes and garlic are done cooking combine them with the pasta and a little S&P over a low heat and combine.

Place in a bowl and grate parm over. Viola!

Delicious and easy. Who says home made sauce has to be hard? Tonight I am off to meet up with Kat before she leaves town again 😦 Off to the bar I go!

Finn McCool’s with ABC University

Yesterday I went out with Emily, Leanna and Adam (err I mean Frank) to Finn McCool’s in Santa Monica. ABC University is a group of young professionals exploring the bar scene in LA one letter at a time. Yesterday was bar “F”. Those with “F” first names got appetizer specials. Overall, ABC University is just a good time.

I spy specials:

Finn McCool’s is your typical Irish Pub. It’s on Main St. in Santa Monica, an area I really need to explore more, and has tons of space.

We were sad that no one in our group had a “F” first name but then in a moment of brilliance Adam changed his name tag and became “Frank”. He even got to wear medal!

When you go to ABC you have to wear a name tag with your name and major. Here is mine…

Obviously I majored in gin martinis. I mean, that is what I’ve studied since I’ve been 21. Last night, however, I ordered a beer. Hey, when your in the Irish bar you should really order a beer, right?

After drinks we were having a good time and we decided to make an impromptu trip to the bowling ally around the corner!

Holy throwback! I haven’t been bowling in SO LONG! I cannot even remember the last time I went.

Of course, if your going bowling there is a pit stop that you have to make before hitting the lanes.

Little old me didn’t know that bars in bowling alleys are customary, but they are! Apparently in Chicago there are also laundry mats in bowling allys?! That is amazing.

Bowling is so much more fun with margaritas (on the rocks with salt) so obviously we got margs before hitting the lanes.

I have to say that I am a terrible bowler. I did, however, manage to bowl a spare and a strike. I only bowl well when Foreigner or Cutting Crew is playing. Unfortch, they only played two songs that fall into that category.

Here is the evidence of my bowling suckage:

Can’t win them all! At least I have my sense of humor (and a 31!). Overall, an awesome time was had by all. Definitely check out ABC University on facebook!

A Preview

I made my bev mo run today and I have a preview of what is to come this weekend. Let’s just say I picked up a little French friend.

Apologies for the poor photo quality- this has been blogged via iPhone because my camera battery died.

I ate nothing I prepared myself today because I went to student group gatherings for lunch and dinner. May I just say that If you are at UCLA LAW youshould join outlaw and CRS. Great organization and specilization with cool people and they also have superior quality meal items like Thai and Indian food.

I have to go now- I am a slave to evidence.

shenanigans

Today there were a lot of shenanigans like this…

Before my family arrived my Feta Package arrived! Last month I won a feta giveaway hosted by Jenna.

Swaggage:

So excited for this bag. I can pack my lunch for school everyday now 🙂

Izzy was very  interested in the new package.

Once my family arrived I had Mozza (OMFG so freaking fantastic! No pics, they are NOT camera friendly!) and Magnolia bakery. There was no dinner. Dinner was 1/2 a devils food cupcake with meringue icing. I also had some Red Mango which has reopened in Westwood as a self serve yogurt place! Like yogurtland but healthier.

We pit stopped at my house for some kitty cuddle time:

And I went shopping where I got a pair of size 28 jeans at JCrew. This is TWO sizes smaller than I wore last year. Whomp Whomp. Hard work and healthy eating pays off. I am tossing all my size 8 pants. It’s not my size anymore. Keeping it would be setting myself up to fail, right?

Ok, busy day tomorrow with food pics! I promise!
