It's that time of year again…

Can you spot it lurking in my freezer? It’s Girl Scout cookie time!

Coming out of Trader Joe’s there was a lone Girl Scout and I just couldn’t help myself. After delving into the nutritional facts I discovered that thin mints and shortbread are the two least unhealthy girl scout cookies. Lets be honest, I went with the chocolate! There is 160 calories per 4 cookies. I leave them in my freezer because I love how they taste when they’re cold. Its all about portion control right? 😉

I figured I was entitled to these cookies because it was the last 1L memo weekend! Feeling so good that it’s Sunday night and this weekend is over. Next week is the last week before Spring Break. On Friday my Mom is coming and and the following Monday we’re going to Palm Springs! The weather is getting better in LA (up to the 70’s again) and with this out of the way it’s starting to feel like spring has sprung.

Question of the Day: What is your memo (or stress) comfort food?

Flying Pig Truck

On Wednesday I just didn’t feel like making a lunch so I headed over to the food truck gathering place on UCLA campus. The Flying Pig truck was there! Its Asian/French fusion tacos so I thought I would give it a try.

The menu mostly consisted of tacos and other small plates. I ordered two tacos and the sliders. I had read that the portions were small so I ordered a lot.

The taco on the left is tamarind duck with toasted almond, pickled beet salad and the taco on the right is smoked chicken with green curry, napa slaw. I preferred the chicken but the duck taco had tons of flavor. The maderian oranges really topped the flavor off nicely.

The sliders were also pretty good, although I got full and only had one. The bun was like a soft butter roll with a red sauce that was similar to ketchup but so much better! It also had pickles and pork. So delicious! I will hit this truck up again when it comes to UCLA!

Jin Patisserie

Last weekend when my Dad and I were kicking around Venice we decided to stop in at Jin Patisserie for cake and some tea! The courtyard was so cute! There were little tables in the courtyard in front of the house that the patisserie is housed in. It was a sunny afternoon and the weather was perfect for sitting outside and having a little cake.

I ordered the Lavender Gateau cake. It was layer cake infused with lavender, butter cream, bitter chocolate ganache, and lavender sponge. It was so light and there was a slight lavender flavor. The chocolate ganache perfectly balanced out the lavender cake flavor. I highly recommend this cake.

To top it off I ordered Turkish tea! So good and we all know about my love of Turkey. I will absolutely visit this place again. On a similar note, I really loved Abbot Kinney Blvd in Venice. Its such a great walkable area and I can see myself hanging out in cafes and reading a book. Something to think about for the future…

Mozza

So when my Dad was in town we went to a great pizza place, Mozza! Mozza is a Nancy Silverton, Mario Batali and Joseph Bastianich pizzaria and osteria. They have incredible pizzas with some amazing ingredients…

It was so cute, the menu and the silver wear were in the envelope with this….

Adorable! I was so hungry after our hike in Griffith Park I dug into the bread sticks quickly

We ordered two pizzas (1) Coach farm goat cheese, leeks, scallions, garlic & bacon  and (2) Fennel sausage, panna, red onion & scallions.

This is the goat cheese pizza

Anddd this is the fennel sausage!

I dug into the goat cheese pizza first

And this was the point that the waiter came by and requested that I stop taking pictures in the restaurant. Doesn’t he know that I have amazing 1st Amendment lawyer connections? Anyway, I put the camera away and concentrated on eating. This was probably the best pizza I have had outside of Chicago. Granted it a different style of pizza but the ingredients were all so good , well cooked, and the balance of flavor was perfect. Also, the crust was perfectly thin and crispy. I ate the whole thing and it was delicious. Definitely making a second trip!

Driving Lesson 3…

On driving lesson 3 I drove on the 10 to the 405! My instructor said that I am ready to take my driving test! Watch out LA.

I have plenty of updates ready to roll however, they might not be posted until the end of the weekend. I have my final 1L memo due Tuesday (and its graded) and I have a cite checking assignments due soon as well. However, today I managed to do a lot of walking. I treated myself to eggs with asparagus and avocado.  It was really good! I walked a total of two hours today and was feeling pretty good! This afternoon wasn’t as good. I felt really really down and then went to a BBQ with some friends. It was nice to get out of the house when I was feeling down but I ate so much! I had two cupcakes, brie, white bread, and two smores. Not my best moment. Oh well, taking the advice of Tina at CarrotsnCake, I’m going to try not to be too down about it. I will pick myself up tomorrow and go on a run. After all, tomorrow is another day…

Jody Maroni's

While strolling the Venice boardwalk on Sunday my Dad and I decided to stop for a hot dog at Jody Maroni’s.

Being Chicagoians, we take our hot dogs seriously and high discerning standards. Dad got one but in true Chicago fashion only got mustard and onion.

I was a little less by the book. I had the works: onions, relish, ketchup, and mustard. It was such a good hot dog! Totally grilled to perfection with a great combo of ingredients.

The fries were also so amazing. They were fried to perfection and also salted within an inch of their life.

mmmm. topped the whole thing off with a diet coke.

Nothing like strolling along on a lazy Sunday with a nice diet coke!

Also, an exciting announcement. Yesterday was the busiest day on left coast contessa with the largest number of hits coming on my health post. So glad ya’ll liked my before pic so much. I should post bloated before shots of me more often 🙂

Outrageous Brownies

There are some foods that are just too good. Barefoot Contessa’s outrageous brownies are one of those food items. I am not surprised that she sent these to her husband Jeffrey when he was in college and he ended up marrying her. That’s the kind of power these brownies have. Also, this is Ina’s recipe but my mother is famous for making these brownies. I hope I can follow in her foot steps… and here is why everyone loves these brownies…

Two sticks of butter, one bag of good chocolate chips and three cubes of baking chocolate! Melt them together, take off the heat and let them cool down.

While the chocolate is melting combine egg, sugar, vanilla, and instant coffee grinds. Set aside until the chocolate has melted and cooled down.

Go ahead and combine the egg mix before setting aside until the butter/chocolate mix melts and cools down.

Also while the butter and chocolate mix is melting combine flour, baking powder and salt and set aside for later.

After a while the butter has melted, cooled, and looks so delicious! Nothing is more yummy than butter and melted chocolate!

Then you combine the cooled chocolate mixture with the egg and sugar combination and combine well. Let cool after combined. Otherwise the egg might do some funky stuff…

Then slowly fold in the flour in three parts…

Once the flour has been completely well combined you can add another handful or so of chocolate chips and walnuts (although you can leave out of your allergic).

Take the mixture and put it into a pan and cook at 350 degrees for 15 mins. Rap the side of the pan to release the air from the brownies and cook for another 20 mins. When the brownies are done baking take them out and let them cool completely. Then refrigerate them overnight (make sure to cover in press and seal!)

Like always, so delicious. I truly believe that these brownies have insane power over people. I blame the coffee!

So good! Make them for yourself: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/outrageous-brownies-recipe3/index.html

Note that I made a half portion because the full is too big to 1) fit in my fridge and 2) can feed a small army.

Oatmeal!

The best way to power up for a long day at the law school grind? Oatmeal!

Oatmeal with a little bit of brown sugar, my beloved Saigon cinnamon, and orange flavored cranberries. Some random man in Trader Joe’s told me about the orange cranberries and they are so delicious. I can always go for more orange flavored anything.

Plus an Ice Tea (made with Tazo Awake) makes the perfect breakfast!
