Spring Break/Life Update

Hey blog followers!

Its been a long relaxing spring break. I ended up inadvertently detoxing from my iphone and blogging this week. I left my charger in LA and the internet reception in Palm Desert was bad. It wouldn’t load the whole site and I filed one post but it took forever so instead of stressing about it I decided to put my posts on hold. That doesn’t mean that I didn’t document my food consumption so get ready for lots of posts!

While in Palm Desert I did do a lot of shopping! I even got brand new running shoes.

They are New Balance 1064’s. Super light, its like running on air! It also has super support which is great for me because I have a really high arch and sometimes I have pain across the top of my arch when I run. I tried these shoes out on my Saturday run and they were great. It has been a while since I had run (another thing I took a break from over spring break) but I felt great and even extended my run by a 1/4 mile. Maybe it was the shoes, maybe it was the mix I was running to, or maybe it was leaving some anger on the pavement but it finally gave me the kick I needed to start to extend my run. So, here come some updates…

Lillet Blanc

Yes, I’m a 22 year old graduate student that likes to come home and sip an aperitif after a long day at school. Is there anything wrong with that?

Lillet Blanc is a wine and citrus liqueur. Good in a cocktail or on its own but always served with a twist. Also was featured in James Bond novels as part of the “Vesper” Martini. I have never found it in a super market but Jensen’s Fine Foods in Palm Springs had it. My Mom even bought me the bottle! Katherine FTW!

Susie Cakes

No UCLA 1L’s, not that Susie Cakes, the Susie Cake Bakery on San Vicente in Brentwood!

I had heard of Susie Cakes several times since I have moved to LA. It isn’t all that far from my apartment and after the Fall graded memo featuring Susie Cakes – our protagonist and manager who is stiffed in her movie star brothers will (we suspect the Nanny of influencing the estate) I knew it was only a matter of time before stopping in for some cupcakes.

My Mom and I decided to check it out before heading out of town. The interior is nicely decorated in the manner that you would want a cupcake shop to be decorated with: cute retro Betty Crocker ads, clean tables, and plenty of cakes in the display case…

After much agonizing we decided to try the special cupcake, which was pineapple upside down cake, and the mocha.

The Pineapple Upside Down Cake had yellow cake with the pineapple folded into the batter and a brown sugar butter cream frosting and a maraschino cherry. Delish! I love that the pineapple was in the batter. It made the cake super moist and almost an undercooked taste but in a good way. The frosting was the highlight. There was a light brown sugar flavor but it wasn’t too sugary, which I think you could easily run the risk of doing.

The mocha was pure bliss! Very chocolaty and coco-ey (ok that’s not a word but it should be). Just perfect, rich, and totally delicious. There are no words!

Overall these cupcakes were distinctive from others I’ve tried at Joan’s, Sprinkles, and Sweet. The cake was cakier but it wasn’t dry. It wasn’t as light as the cupcakes at Joan’s, but it was very flavorful. In addition, the frosting was some of the best that I’ve had in LA. Next time I go back I’m going to have a red velvet. I hope it’s soon!

Happy (early) Birthday to Me!

So while my Mom and I were shopping today on Montana we popped into a store called “The Quilted Monkey”. The sell these glasses and pillows I’ve seen before by catstudio with cities and states on them. I got one for every city I’ve lived in AND Martha’s Vineyard (which I have visited many times over the years).

They are in order that I lived in or visited: Chicago, Martha’s Vineyard, Boston, and LA. Little known fact: besides Logan airport, I actually went to and visited in Martha’s Vineyard before I lived in Boston!

Look at the top, you can see the North Shore! Also, Lake Michigan, Second City, Millennium Park, and the Loop! In the top you can see the real reason its called the “windy city”.

Great! Here is Martha’s Vineyard. Note the Black Dog, Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, the cliffs etc.

A set would not be complete without my favorite city, Boston! Ah, my great love:

In this next one you can see the MFA, Fenway Park, the South End, Trinity Church, Back Bay and the Charles River:

And last of all, my new city, Los Angeles!

Malibu, UCLA, Beverly Hills and Bell Air! You know, my ‘hood!

Also, I picked up this great Boston postcard:

I already had this one:

I have a little home improvement project planned with these post cards. I especially love this one because it has the State House on it, where I worked this time last year … I can add to my collection which my mother started:

Great, right? Not only does it match my apartment colors (!) but it has such a great message. My mom cleverly put it in a see through frame. While I cannot take credit for the decoration of my apartment (those snaps go to the talented Danny Mailley) I really like these little touches and I have a plan formulating to incorporate the post cards so stay tuned.

Clean House

Hello everyone!

This is not about food, its about cleanliness! My Mom is in LA right now, and I knew that she was going to give my apartment the “white glove once over”. Basically look over everything! I’m not a messy person, I am a bit clutter-ish. Carolyn, former roommate, will remember the “Starbucks graveyard” from Jr. year. I’ve gotten better though, but I still don’t clean my stove, for example, as much as I should. You can generally look at old posts and see a greasy, gross, food splattered stove top but on Friday AM, that became history…

So clean!!!! The trick? Baking soda and water! Just make sure you don’t drink the baking soda with water, cause your stomach will explode just like in that failure to warn torts case…

I also cleaned the rest of the kitchen…

And Izzy was so happy in the clean apartment.

I made oatmeal for breakfast today before meeting up with Mom for Starbucks and shopping at the UCLA Thrift Store, OSH, Abbot Kinney in Venice, and Montana Ave. in Santa Monica.

In my oatmeal I had dried apricots, dried cranberries, and Saigon Cinnamon.  So delish and hearty! Can’t go wrong with oatmeal for breakfast!

iphone app

Just downloaded the wordpress iPhone app. This is a test to see if this works. Now I can update my blog from anywhere! Yay! Here should be a pic of the tea I’m having tonight, trader joes sleepy time tea.

Driving Lesson 3…

On driving lesson 3 I drove on the 10 to the 405! My instructor said that I am ready to take my driving test! Watch out LA.

I have plenty of updates ready to roll however, they might not be posted until the end of the weekend. I have my final 1L memo due Tuesday (and its graded) and I have a cite checking assignments due soon as well. However, today I managed to do a lot of walking. I treated myself to eggs with asparagus and avocado.  It was really good! I walked a total of two hours today and was feeling pretty good! This afternoon wasn’t as good. I felt really really down and then went to a BBQ with some friends. It was nice to get out of the house when I was feeling down but I ate so much! I had two cupcakes, brie, white bread, and two smores. Not my best moment. Oh well, taking the advice of Tina at CarrotsnCake, I’m going to try not to be too down about it. I will pick myself up tomorrow and go on a run. After all, tomorrow is another day…

Outrageous Brownies

There are some foods that are just too good. Barefoot Contessa’s outrageous brownies are one of those food items. I am not surprised that she sent these to her husband Jeffrey when he was in college and he ended up marrying her. That’s the kind of power these brownies have. Also, this is Ina’s recipe but my mother is famous for making these brownies. I hope I can follow in her foot steps… and here is why everyone loves these brownies…

Two sticks of butter, one bag of good chocolate chips and three cubes of baking chocolate! Melt them together, take off the heat and let them cool down.

While the chocolate is melting combine egg, sugar, vanilla, and instant coffee grinds. Set aside until the chocolate has melted and cooled down.

Go ahead and combine the egg mix before setting aside until the butter/chocolate mix melts and cools down.

Also while the butter and chocolate mix is melting combine flour, baking powder and salt and set aside for later.

After a while the butter has melted, cooled, and looks so delicious! Nothing is more yummy than butter and melted chocolate!

Then you combine the cooled chocolate mixture with the egg and sugar combination and combine well. Let cool after combined. Otherwise the egg might do some funky stuff…

Then slowly fold in the flour in three parts…

Once the flour has been completely well combined you can add another handful or so of chocolate chips and walnuts (although you can leave out of your allergic).

Take the mixture and put it into a pan and cook at 350 degrees for 15 mins. Rap the side of the pan to release the air from the brownies and cook for another 20 mins. When the brownies are done baking take them out and let them cool completely. Then refrigerate them overnight (make sure to cover in press and seal!)

Like always, so delicious. I truly believe that these brownies have insane power over people. I blame the coffee!

So good! Make them for yourself: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/outrageous-brownies-recipe3/index.html

Note that I made a half portion because the full is too big to 1) fit in my fridge and 2) can feed a small army.

Oatmeal!

The best way to power up for a long day at the law school grind? Oatmeal!

Oatmeal with a little bit of brown sugar, my beloved Saigon cinnamon, and orange flavored cranberries. Some random man in Trader Joe’s told me about the orange cranberries and they are so delicious. I can always go for more orange flavored anything.

Plus an Ice Tea (made with Tazo Awake) makes the perfect breakfast!
